In Rememberance
Bill King, Lon Simmons, Ray Fosse

The Handshake

By Andy Dolich
Ray Fosse’s untimely passing on October 13 brought me back to 1986 when he joined Lon Simmons and Bill King, creating a terrific trio of talent in the A’s broadcast booth. Major League catchers have little or no fear of anything. When you are sitting next to legends of the mike you might have some reservations. Not Ray.

As a person he exemplified teamwork, leadership, trust and a perfect sense of the moment; he fit in. Bill King, Lon Simmons, Bill Rigney, Ken Korach, Glen Kuiper, Dallas Braden, Vince Cotroneo, Amaury Pi-Gonzalez, Manolo Hernandez-Douen, Chris Townsend, Greg Papa, Julio Gonzalez, Tim Roye, Ted Robinson, John Shrader, Hank Greenwald, Dick Stockton, Monte Moore, Evelio Areas Mendoza, Roxy Bernstein and others I might have omitted. Yes, Ray Fosse fit in and stood out.

Thirty-five years in any job is more than a milestone. Thirty-five years for one team in a major league broadcast booth talking to millions of fans was a gift. The San Francisco Bay Area has produced many of the most beloved broadcasters and story tellers in the world of sports.

Baseball and Broadcasting was in his heart and soul. A two time MLB All-Star in 1970, 71, World Series Champion with the A’s in 1973, 74. Ray broadcast three A’s World Series appearances in 1988,89 and 90, including the sweep of the Giants in the “Tectonic Tussle” in 1989.

When Ray Fosse shook your hand it would be implanted in your memory bank forever. His fingers may have been pointing in different directions but his smile made you a teammate for life. We are all the better for having known him.

Saying Goodbye
The San Francisco Giants completed a wild comeback on July 22
in Los Angeles. “Late Night” LaMonte Wade Jr. singled in the tenth inning on a line drive to right field, scoring Jason Vosler and
Thairo Estrada. Final score: Giants 5, Dodgers 3.

An Unforgettable Giants Season

By Bruce Macgowan
The Giants have been an integral part of the Bay Area’s sports culture for over six decades, but there will never be a season quite like 2021.

There’s no contending the fact that the Giants of the 1960s, with stars such as Mays, McCovey and Marichal, and the more recent teams which won three World Series, were better teams. So too were the Giants teams from 2000-2004 with Bonds and Kent, as well as the amazing 1993 which won 103 times but missed the playoffs by just one game.

But what made the 2021 season so different and memorable was the way this team came out of nowhere to post the best record in baseball. Who saw this coming I don’t think even the players, the front office or manager Gabe Kapler did.

That’s why I was highly skeptical of their chances of advancing past the first round of the playoffs because they had to face the one team that played at almost the exact same level as they did. And on paper, the rival Dodgers were a much better team.

Going into the ninth inning of last Thursday night’s game five between the old rivals, the two teams had two runs and six hits each and had both stranded had six runners. Both the Giants and Dodgers had gone to their bullpens in an effort to snatch this winner-take-all contest, one that riveted the attention of not only baseball fans of the entire state, but nationally as well.

I was at all three games in San Francisco, sitting with friends in a luxury box above the second deck behind home plate, and we all felt that sense of something memorable and dramatic unraveling.

The Dodgers won the game in the ninth inning in dramatic and yet controversial fashion. After Cody Bellinger ended a long streak of futility by smacking a solid RBI single off of young flame throwing rookie closer Camilo Doval, Giants’ fans had a sinking feeling, and with good reason. Their hopes sank even further when Max Scherzer came jogging out of the bullpen in the last of the ninth in an effort to preserve a 2-1 win.

LA third baseman Justin Turner, who had scored what turned out to be the winning run, gave the Giants an opening when he couldn’t corral Kris Bryant’s hard grounder with one out, giving two of the Giants’ unsung heroes of the season, LaMonte Wade Jr. and Wilmer Flores a chance to provide the heroics.

But Wade, who authored so many clutch game winning hits in the late innings and who smashed a long fly foul to right field, then took a called third strike on a pitch that could have just as easily been called a ball. That was deflating enough, but when Wilmer Flores followed by getting called for a swing for a game-ending strike out, that was that.

The final call for the strikeout was particularly painful because replays clearly showed that Flores' bat did not go around. Scherzer probably would have retired Flores anyway, but who’s to say for certain? The infuriated fans hurled insults and even some garbage at the umpires. It was a most unfortunate thing to see a dream season suddenly cut short, literally killed by the poor judgment of one umpire on one pitch.

But rather than dwell on the misfortune and negativity that such a loss to a hated rival ignites, Giants fans should revel in the season the club had, the emerging new stars the Giants unveiled, and the brilliant work of manager Gabe Kapler, who easily did the best job of skippering any team in baseball in 2021.

My favorite moments of 2021? A tenth inning win in LA where LaMonte Wade Jr forged his nickname: ‘Late Night LaMonte’ by whacking a two out, two-run tenth inning single that produced a stunning victory. A September game against the visiting Braves where with two outs in the ninth and down to their last strike, Donovan Solano slammed a game-tying home run, and Wade again picked up the game winner with an RBI single in the tenth. Or how about the opening playoff win just a little over a week ago where Rocklin native Logan Webb pitched the game of his young career in a 4-0 shutout of the Dodgers, striking out ten hitters along the way.

I think the thing that most Giants’ fans will take away from this season were the unlikely stories which unfolded each week as this group of mostly unknowns, journeymen and youngsters put together a season that only a fiction writer would have the imagination to write about. 2021: An unforgettable season for the San Francisco Giants.

Bet on NASCAR? LOL, Y'All!
Yo, Bubba! Just because it's a Mobile app doesn't mean you can place bets when you drive.

But on a more serious note, I am told by motorsports insiders that "smart, professional gamblers" don't bet on car races. They will not risk large sums of money when an entire wager can be lost if a 25-cent part malfunctions.

And those folks will stay away from Fubo Sportsbook, a mobile sportsbook from Fubo Gaming, a subsidiary of sports-first TV streaming platform fuboTV Inc, which has announced a partnership with NASCAR to become an authorized gaming operator https://sbcamericas.com/2021/10/15/fubo-sportsbook-partners-with-nascar/

It's you and your naive friends they want, regular folks who will jump in and eagerly turn Wages into Wagers!

How did Mario's facial bruises vanish? – Part II
In last week's Sports Today's Letter to the Editor reader Rudi Petschek shared with us that the facial bruises suffered by Mario Andretti in practice during the Indy 500 in 1969 were still conspicuous when he donned his helmet to start the race. Yet the bruises had vanished by the time the winning photo was snapped. How? Rudi continues...

Little known beyond motorsports enthusiasts, Mario had no need for cosmetologist nor Photoshop to conceal his facial bruises, as he was better prepared for such an eventuality than were his competitors, for in attendance, and happy to oblige, was — wait for it — his identical twin brother Aldo.

YES!

It was Aldo subbing for Mario in the post-race photos etched in fans’ memories and archived for posterity. An aspiring racing driver himself, an early accident had encouraged his premature retirement.

And yet, without ever having turned a lap at the Speedway, Aldo’s image nevertheless entered posterity as “winner” of the Indianapolis 500, coincidentally the same year as brother Mario’s effigy was added to the huge sterling silver Borg-Warner Trophy permanently housed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.

The Nate Sudfeld Story
He'll Make You Forget Nick Mullens

By Robert A. Moselle, Esq.

With Jimmy G.'s availability an hour-to-hour saga and Trey Lance's kamikaze helmet-to-helmet goal-line collisions with 300-pound defensive linemen, we must now consider the next phase of this season: 49er Coach and QB Guru Shanahan turns to (drum roll, please), "Mr. Inevitable," Modesto's own NATHAN MICHAEL SUDFELD.

On April 7, 2021, Nate signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. On August 31, 2021, he was released. One day later, he re-signed to the 49ers practice squad. According to Salary Sport, his 2021 base salary is $770,000. https://salarysport.com/american-football/player/nate-sudfeld/

Originally selected by Washington in the sixth round (187th overall) in the 2016 NFL Draft, Nate was signed by the Eagles before the 2017 season and served as the backup QB in Super Bowl LII. He finished his collegiate career as Indiana University's all-time leader in both passing yards (7,879) and passing TDs and is one of the most highly-decorated QBs in Hoosier history. The beat goes on: As Quarterback at Modesto Christian High School he was the team’s most valuable player, Trans Valley League Offensive MVP, second team all-state and first team all-district honors as a senior and was a National Honor Society member.

He's smart, a prolific passer and at 6-6, 227 lb. he will DISH OUT concussions, not sustain them. No, he's not mobile, but NATE WILL BE READY when his name is called, which neither Jimmy G. nor Trey can guarantee. With QBs and 49ers at all positions an endangered species, get ready for "Mr. Inevitable," NATHAN (Nate) SUDFELD.

At least the Red Sox are still in it!
My hopes for a Red Sox/Giants World Series have been dashed. I'm not really excited about any combo for the World Series this year...

SO! A double question this week!

Only one MLB franchise has never been in the World Series. Which franchise is it? Including the team that has never been in the World Series, six teams have never won the World Series.
Who are they?

Hint: Two of the teams that have been there were in the playoffs this year but are now out!

MATCH RECAP: Earthquakes 1, LAFC 3
Quakes to host Austin, Vancouver at PayPal Park next week

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes fell to LAFC 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Banc of California Stadium.

LAFC got on the board very early, taking a 1-0 lead in the third minute. Cristian Arango played a back-heel pass into the path of Danny Musovski, who scored from close range.

LAFC then doubled their advantage in the 28th minute when Arango converted a penalty kick.

The Earthquakes used all five of their substitutes by the 55th minute, bringing on a number of attacking players in search of a comeback. The Quakes then got on the board in the 61st minute when Chofis sent a corner kick into the box that was headed across the front of goal by Andy Rios and put away by Carlos Fierro.

San Jose created several scoring opportunities late, but LAFC were able to capitalize on the counterattack with Arango tallying his second goal of the match in the 88th minute.

The Quakes return to San Jose for a pair of home matches next week. Wednesday's match vs. Austin FC, presented by the City of San Jose, kicks off from PayPal Park at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Bay Area, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF

Where is the NBA Headed?
Kyrie Irving

"They've got Biden, we've got Kyrie”
 by Pete Elman

Kyrie Irving is a basketball wizard, a $36 million/year superstar on a
super-team with two other guys who between the three of them have two MVPs, seven scoring titles, three rings and 27 all-star appearances.

This is a well-read and articulate young man; a humanitarian, social and political activist, vegan, and a father. He attended Duke for one year and promised his Dad he’d earn his degree in five years; it’s been ten. I get it--he’s been busy.

And busy in another realm as well. This is the latest communique from Camp Kyrie: “I am protected by God and so are my people,” Kyrie said October 9, “We stand together.” How about the rest of us, Kyrie? Where do we stand? In other words, “I ain’t getting’ the shot.”

Kyrie--the world is not flat, and vaccines, as much as you don’t want to get one, really work. You are woefully misinformed and need to do your research.

If anyone thinks the anti-vaxers are caving, surrendering their precious freedom, think again. Their new mantra: They've got Biden, we've got Kyrie Irving.

Facebook and YouTube may have tried to ban them, but Covid’s conspiracy kings say that vaccine-denying NBA players have re-empowered the far right. They are the new disinformation heroes…” Rolling Stone.

Senator Ted Cruz has reached a new low. After tweeting, “I stand with Kyrie Irving,” Cruz then added the hashtag #YourBodyYourChoice. How dare he expropriate the language of embattled and courageous abortion rights advocates in the wake of the odious new Texas law?

Here we go again with the false equivalency; vulgar misogyny vs. Hillary’s e-mails; an attempted coup vs. Hunter’s laptop; hydroxychloroquine vs. science, and Joe Biden’s Covid leadership vs. conspiracy theories. This is America, 2021.

It’s common for athletes to weigh in on the vaccine mandate issue as if they knew more than Dr. Fauci. How about these round numbers in the US? 45 million infected; 730,000 dead; 100,000 infections and almost 1,500 new deaths every day. Did we balk at vaccinating for smallpox, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, and tuberculosis when those vaccines became available? And were they “optional?”

Kyrie Irving has his supporters—and enablers. Teammate Kevin Durant refuses to give Irving advice on vaccination. “It’s a personal decision.” Courageous, KD.

On September 29 LeBron James said, “I stand with my fellow players. And I won’t play in any arena that bans another NBA player because they make a personal healthcare choice.” So what did he do two weeks ago? Suit up at Chase Center against Steph Curry.

Jemele Hill nails the hypocrisy in his recent piece:

And the union? The players’ association rejected a league-wide vaccine mandate, pushing back on the league’s plan to dock the pay of unvaccinated players for any games they miss because of local coronavirus ordinances. Kyrie Irving is a union vice president.

By not taking a vaccine, it’s not just a decision you’ve made for you and your family. This is not about freedom of choice—nobody is taking away your freedom. Not being vaccinated affects everyone you come in contact with. 97% of all Covid deaths are among the unvaccinated.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

For 40 years Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been the conscience of pro basketball. Andrew Wiggins, before he caved---not to “safety and science”---but to the money and pressure from his teammates, insisted “what’s right to one person isn’t right to the other.” Kareem swatted that one away like a weak layup.

“Society only exists because we consider the greater good to be more important than individual choices. Try driving on the left side of the road, don’t pay taxes, and don’t get your children a polio vaccine. The problem with that philosophy is that the rest of us pay for those sloppy thinkers because they are the ones clogging our hospitals, crushing our economy, and keeping us from our loved ones.”

Jabbar continued, “I think of the situation like those old fire brigades, when people stood in a line, passing buckets of water to save their neighbor’s house from burning to the ground. Maybe some people were afraid to join the line. But when the town leaders joined in, it encouraged others to do their duty. Today’s athletes are like those leaders. You either join the line to save your neighbor’s home, or you stand by and let it burn because you don’t owe them anything.”

Amen, Kareem.

So, come on, Kyrie—show us what a terrific team player you are. Grow up—and roll up (your sleeves)--and get back to work doing what you love. Maybe the life you save will be your own.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
